Thank You, Mercury!

Mercury is retrograde and this one has brought me a new cell phone and blue tooth and a cleaned out computer with a spruced up operating system and new programs. Keywords here: technical stuff. I haven’t had a blue tooth before, so I’m getting used to that. And my computer is happy to have had an overhaul.

Mercury retrograde can bring up technical problems, communication misunderstandings, travel delays and past relationship/projects coming back from the past. It’s a great time to get organized, re-group, and re-think how to move forward when the time is right. It’s also been great for healing past issues for me as well.

I wrote a new song this week, so I’m glad that this Mercury retrograde gave me my songwriting habit back. I’ve written 2 songs this month. I’m being given some art supplies next week, so my painting and drawing outlet is also returning. I used to create a lot of artwork and haven’t for years. This is all very healing.

Bitter/Sweet

My friend, Marie, had a stroke over the weekend. She just turned 84. She was on medication for strokes but it made her sick and she stopped taking it awhile back. She’s back home now, but she’s not doing all that well. I know these things are part of life, but I feel bad she’s going through this. She doesn’t sound like herself when I talked to her.

I didn’t realize how sad I was about it until I tried recording vocals in the studio tonight. Things just weren’t coming together and we had to stop working on them. My producer, Robert Eibach, put some great drums down on “Carry Love With You” after that. He is really awesome and did what he could to make me feel better.

I guess I need to become a better actress so I can perform no matter what is going on in my life. Maybe I’m just raw from a combination of consecutive changes that have happened in the last 6 months. What’s funny about it is now I’m closer than I’ve ever been to achieving my real dreams in life. So now I get what bittersweet is about.

Music Videos, Etc.

I’ve been checking out music videos, websites and live concerts on the internet this weekend. It helps me to see what other artists are doing in the mainstream. Mostly I’ve been looking at female artists because I’m a girl and I need to see what they’re doing. I enjoy all the creativity and how different people are expressing themselves.

We’re going to be re-designing my website when we release the new album so I’ve been paying attention to which sites I’ve had more fun going through. I really like the website Norah Jones has for her work. She’s got such a great vocal style. It was interesting to see what Jewel has been doing over the years. Her non-profit work was really nice.

Avril Lavigne’s website had some cool stuff. Her music video for “When You’re Gone” made me cry. The actors they cast did a beautiful job with the story and the editing was brilliant. I like Sheryl Crow’s newer videos on her site. She’s really come into her own artistically. That’s good to see. I love seeing artists thriving in success.

Recording

I was in the studio last night with my producer, Robert Eibach. I played him the new song I wrote and he said we were putting on the CD. So we recorded my guitar part and lead vocal for it. It was a good session. Robert and I have a lot of fun working together. He’s very supportive with me and I appreciate that.

It was a good thing that I had practiced the song so much this week. That made the recording performance really solid. Now my cat, Macey, will get to hear me work with the track so I can write harmonies. Pretty soon she’ll be able to sing my songs. When I adopted her, my friend told Macey that I would be playing music for her.

I was listening to some old recordings that I did with my bass player, Scott Riedle, years ago when he and I were married. He’s in love now and is so cute in love. I’m excited to meet his future 2nd wife. I can really hear a difference in my vocal technique. There were some things I did before that were nice, but now my style is more developed.

New Song

I’ve been practicing the new song I wrote last weekend. When I write a new song I usually have to play it around a hundred times to get it into my body’s memory banks. My cat, Macey, looks at me funny when I play the song over and over and over again when I’m practicing. It’s the first new song I’ve written since I got her.

I haven’t been focused on writing new material because the songs on the CD have captivated my attention. Writing harmony parts has been where my creative energy has gone. Learning the lead vocal on the tracks has also been taking time. I need to sound like my album when I sing live. Or at least I think so.

This song just needed to be written. It came from a place of emotion that wasn’t going away and the lingering stuff inside me needs a voice. I’m playing the song for my producer tonight. A couple of friends have heard the song and think it should go on the album. It’s always the songs that I feel the most vulnerable singing that people like most.

Loving Life

A friend was telling me she thought I would be great doing something that would require that I relocate to another city. My response was that it sounded interesting, but I love my life and wouldn’t want to leave where I am. She told me that was really special because she doesn’t know of many people who love their life

That got me thinking. I remember when I didn’t love my life at all. I really wanted to be able to love being alive, but I was not pleased with my circumstance. I’m not sure what the turning point was exactly for me, I just know that I wanted to feel better and I was determined to find what was going to help me do that. A lot has changed since then.

I think that pain and discomfort can be a great motivator. I know for me, I’m a person who wants comfort, security, love and peacefulness around whatever is happening with me in my life. I know my seeking kept bringing me to God because I prayed for Divine intervention a lot. I just felt too small and insignificant to think I could change much.

More about Macey...

My little cat, Macey, gets cuter everyday. She smiles a lot and she likes to hold her tail straight up in the air with a curl at the end like a question mark when she walks. She follows me around the apartment, from room to room, when I’m home doing things and loves to wake me up in the middle of the night so I can pet her and give her kisses.

She’s a mommy’s girl. When I wake up in the morning I always find Macey sleeping next to me wrapped up in a ball or stretched out on her back. She has a white belly and looks so adorable to me when she rolls over like that. It’s nice to have such a happy cat. She always puts me in a great mood when I’m with her.

Macey likes these small aluminum shiny bright colored balls and looks like she’s playing soccer when she gets running around with one. She keeps me thoroughly entertained when I’m home. It’s so much fun to watch her do her kitty thing. Holding her is also pretty special because she hugs me when she’s in my arms. She is such a love.

Car Wash

I’ve needed to go get a car wash for about a month now. I do like keeping my car clean, especially on the inside. There are people I know who keep lots of stuff in their car because they’re out and about all the time and don’t get home much. I’m more of a 3 mile radius girl, which means I don’t drive much out of my immediate area very often.

I think that’s why I really dig living in LA. I don’t have to drive in much traffic on a regular basis. Simple is good for me. I also like staying close to home so I can spend time with my cat, Macey. Macey is such a cute little girl. I’ve discovered that she’s camera shy. My friend came over to take some pictures of her and she wasn’t too happy about it.

He did get some shots of her, but I’d like to get some pictures of her being herself instead of being curled up in a ball in my arms. She didn’t like the camera at all. Maybe when she’s a little older she’ll get more comfortable with photo shoots. I’ll put up a picture of her online when my friend sends them to me. Maybe I’ll get a car wash tomorrow.

Busy With Music

It’s been an awesome week doing music. On Tuesday, we were in the studio with Carl Strand. My producer, Robert Eibach, and I recorded the basic tracks for “Reality” and “Carry Love With You” and then Carl came in to put down some killer guitar for “I Am”, "Hooray For The Living”, and “I’d Rather Leave You.” It was a blast.

On Wednesday, I got to play a pick up gig at Universal Bar & Grill for Sheena Metal. It was great to be back at the grill. It’s such a fun room to jam in and the crowd is always different. I’ve met a lot of great artists there. Jeff Laine was on the bill that night and he was playing a new trio thing with a guitar player and a harmonica player. Good stuff.

Last night I played at a private party for my friend. Her daughter graduated from college and this was a celebration for that. I used studio tracks for 2 songs and then played a couple more with guitar. It’s kind of a cool contrast for people to hear the studio work and then the solo acoustic thing. The raw emotion of being on strings alone is cool.

The Coolest Guitar Pick

My producer, Robert Eibach, gave me the coolest guitar pick I’ve ever had. It has a picture of Jesus on it and then when you hold it at a different angle it has a picture of a cross on it that says, “Jesus saves”. I was so excited when he gave it to me. Being a new Christian, having Jesus in my hand when I play a song with my guitar is just perfect.

Maybe it’s me, but the little things in my life make me so happy. And I’ll probably play much better when I use the pick because it makes me smile when I look at it. Robert has seen me go through a lot of changes in the time that we’ve been working together. Recently he told me that Jesus seems to really be working for me.

Getting feedback helps me see when I’m on the right track. When I was into doing Indian sweat lodges Robert thought that was interesting, but didn’t really have much to say about it. I’ve been a lot happier since I invited Jesus in my life and a lot more peaceful since I got baptized. I wasn’t expecting that coming from a Jewish background. It’s cool.

Navigating Change

It takes time to adjust to change, even good changes in life. Some changes take time to adjust to because of the emotions that are involved. I find that when I’m adjusting to change I need more rest than usual. Lately I’m just going through the motions of my day and getting acclimated to some new things going on and I feel very zen in some ways.

Some of my zen-ness is just a need to be quiet. One of the changes that came about recently was ending a fairly close friendship that had been in my life for around 4 years. Friends are special to me, but sometimes an association just runs its course and then it’s over. A parting of the ways kind of thing happens and the journey continues.

There’s a bittersweet feeling in my heart with it all. New people and activities have come into my life so I’m enjoying the experiences of what I’m doing now. My cat is totally adorable and being with her makes me smile. It’s very special to be her mommy. I’m lucky to be so blessed in what I receive. There’s a peace inside of me that is priceless.

Mother's Day

I called my mom for Mother’s Day this morning and she was having a nice day. She had already talked to my brother and my sister called when we were on the phone, so she felt loved. All of us live out of town, so my parents were going to be doing their own thing today. They’re happy together and are still very much in love after 51 yrs. of marriage.

I’m lucky my parents are healthy and doing so well. I have a number of friends whose moms aren’t alive anymore. There’s something about calling my mom that is just different than when I talk to someone else. I don’t have kids yet, so I don’t know what makes it that way. I do love my cat, Macey, completely and I adore being her mommy.

I had a necklace made for Macey and a matching bracelet for me, kind of a “mommy and me” kitty thing. Macey gets freaked out when I put it around her neck, (I tried twice), and I don’t have the heart to put the necklace on her anymore. She looked so sad. It’s a really pretty ankle bracelet on me, though. So I’ll just think of her when I wear the set.

Singing

I was in the studio with my producer, Robert Eibach, working on lead vocals. So much has changed since we started this project and I could hear things in the track of “Life is Good” that needed to be re-done, so we recorded a new lead vocal on the song. It was much better and took less time then what we originally had done. That felt good.

It’s nice to hear growth in how my singing voice has improved. That’s been a goal of mine for awhile. I’m more relaxed and happier when I sing these days. I noticed that when I’ve played pick up gigs at Universal Bar & Grill. I played another one last night. Ever since I became Christian how I am inside is more balanced for some reason.

We’re probably going to record new lead vocals for some other songs on the CD, too. It just makes sense to do that. With as much time, energy, and money that we’re putting into this project we might as well make it as good as we can while we’re still working on it. The vocal does make a song great, so I’ll keep working on improving my voice.

Fate

My flight from Phoenix to Burbank was cancelled as I was waiting for the plane when I was returning from a visit with my parents in Tucson. I was sitting next to a woman who travels a lot for business. She took me with her to the Customer Service counter for the airline so we could get a seat on the next flight out. We had a 4 hour wait ahead of us.

She mentioned to me that she had become a Christian after being Catholic. I told her I had recently become Christian after being Jewish. We had so much to talk about after that and I had so many questions, especially about her experience being baptized as a Christian because I was thinking about doing that. She invited me to come to her church.

I woke up pretty sick, but met her and her family at the Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch anyway. It’s a non-denominational church with a lot of members. They have a big tank of water for baptisms on the side of the stage. I had never seen that before. During the service I was baptized. It was a lot different than my Bat Mitzvah.

Music is Bliss

There was a lot going on this week and I’m lucky that music has been a big part of that. I was invited to play a gig in August at a benefit concert for a horse rescue in Fairplay, CO, http://www.flyingah.com/. My friends from the Boulder area are going to come up for it so it will be a great hang for the weekend being with friends in the mountains.

I’m also really excited because I used to play gigs for the owner of the horse rescue when she owned a bar in St.Mary’s Glacier and it will be a fun reunion for us. I love being in the mountains in Colorado. I found my soul there when I lived in Telluride. It will be good to see a gazillion stars at night again. The mountains are special.

This week, I also got to play a pick up gig at Universal Bar & Grill in addition to being in the studio and playing a show at CAP Theater. I played a couple of my brother’s songs at my shows and that felt good. I love his music. My family lives out of town and singing his songs reminded me of being with them in a wonderful way. I love when that happens.

Power of the Cross

My friend told me that the cross is a powerful symbol and that’s why it’s used for exorcisms. I’d seen that in movies but I didn’t know the basis of its use. I thought the dramatic effect was cool. I also laughed when I watched Dracula movies and the vampires would run from the cross. It just cracked me up for some reason.

Now that I’m a new Christian, (I guess that could be considered Born Again), I decided to order myself a cross to wear. I was excited to get it because it seemed like it would be fun to wear it and it felt good to think about it. I found a really pretty one, called the harmony cross at www.applesofgold.com and ordered it for myself.

For the last year or so, I’ve been dealing with an individual who isn’t, let’s say, big on integrity. I’ve learned a lot from this woman and my experience in working with her has propelled my growth. My cross arrived yesterday and within 10 minutes of me putting it on she contacted me to tell me she needs me out of her life. That’s one powerful cross.

Coffee Shops

I’m meeting a friend at Starbuck’s later and it’s really nice that we can meet at a coffee shop rather than a bar or restaurant. I love being able to just hang for a bit and have something healthy to drink. I’m not one to hang in bars, unless I happen to be playing a gig at one, so it’s nice to have an alternative and I don’t always eat out.

There are a bunch of coffee shops around where I live. They’re all pretty good. I think I just get used to certain places and that’s where I go. Coffee shops are quieter than bars and it’s better for my voice not to have to talk at loud volumes to have a conversation. When I want to unwind and get together to chat, I like the coffee shop vibe.

The atmosphere is different when people are on caffeine and sugar rather than alcohol. I know a lot of people drink herbal teas and don’t eat sugar, but you get my drift. In LA, I see quite a few writers at coffee shops working on their scripts or books. So maybe there’s a creative energy that I gravitate towards and that’s why I dig the scene.

Macey

I haven’t written about my cat, Macey, in awhile. She’s such a sweet little girl. Since she’s an adult cat now, she’s been trying new flavors of food and with all the pet food recalls that have been happening this year, she’s getting used to eating wet food without gravy. She’s a gravy girl and likes those cans of food the best.

When she was a kitten, there weren’t as many choices to get for her. Most of the kitten food is turkey, chicken, fish and seafood flavors. Now she also gets to have duck, venison, beef and salmon. She doesn’t care for lamb or sardines; maybe because she’s only a year old and that’s better suited for an older cat’s taste buds.

Since the gravy flavors aren’t available these days, I’ve been giving her canned turkey meat, grilled albacore and cod to supplement her diet. She liked how the gravy made her dry food moist and added more flavor to it. She gets other cat treats, too, but I’ll be happy when I can get her the gravy food again. I like giving her what she likes best.

My Brother's Songs

My sister-in-law sent me a CD of my older brother, Steve’s, songs that he recorded some years back. I grew up with my brother’s songs and when I was younger I thought that writing songs was the coolest thing ever. I was in awe of my brother and didn’t think I would ever be able to write a song. I was 23 when I wrote my first song.

Listening to this CD is bringing me back to how much I love my brother’s music, how incredibly gifted he is, and how sensitive he is about people. I’m so glad I have this collection of his songs in my life again. I remember listening to Steve play guitar and sing his songs when I was little and how we would all sing together as a family.

When people ask me who my influences are in music, I don’t usually tell them my brother, Steve, because his songs were never recorded for commercial release and they wouldn’t understand it. My brother, Steve, told my parents to buy me a guitar when I was 11 and he drove me to guitar lessons. I’m an artist because of my brother, Steve Cohn.

Song Production

Robert Eibach and I were in the studio again this week. We finished the rough mix on “Our Love”. I’m learning a lot working with Robert. My ear is becoming better in hearing what works and what doesn’t. I’m appreciating his talent as a producer more and more as we spend time on my songs.

It’s going to be interesting to hear what the final product sounds like. We still have quite a bit of production to do on the remaining songs for the full length CD. What I like so far is that each song has its own vibe and still sound like my songs. Some producers loose the heart of the artist when they produce a song for commercial release.

Robert keeps the integrity of the music together in his work and brings the soul out in songs. My song “Our Love” has even more depth and range because of his production on the recording. I’m lucky with that. I don’t have any talent in arrangements or engineering. It’s nice to be working with a producer who does.

I'm A New Christian

Last week when I was at church I decided to invite Jesus into my heart because there was something striking that the minister said about how God will not barge in, He needs to be invited. Something in my heart told me that inviting Jesus into my life would be a good thing, so that’s what I did. I’ve tried so many spiritual things, this one seemed intriguing.

I have a number of friends who love Jesus and we’ve had numerous conversations about Him, His teachings, and the beauty of Christ Consciousness. I had been doing a lot of inner heart work prior to going to church, so I was pretty open. I didn’t realize that this simple invitation was going to change everything in my life for me. And I’m happy for it.

Part of the prayer invitation to Jesus asked for the Holy Spirit to fill my body and it did do that. Something changed in my cells. I don’t think I look any different, but there is something profoundly different about everything in me. It’s a personal thing I can’t explain but the feeling is much better. I like being Christian because now I know peace.

Video & Recording

My videographer/director, Eddie Rouse, and I finished shooting the raw footage for my “Wakantanka” music video yesterday evening. It was an amazing 2 days of shooting. We actually skipped the swimming pool shot, but got in some other interesting things. When we were shooting me playing the guitar outside, I did get some sun and needed the tan.

Eddie is also a very talented actor, so he was able to teach me a lot. Eddie is playing percussion on my album, so it was really cool to work with him in a director’s capacity. Multi-talented people jazz me and it’s great to collaborate with artists in LA. I’m privileged to work with so many gifted people. I’ve grown so much as a result.

My producer, Robert Eibach, and I were in the studio tonight with Scott Riedle recording bass parts for my songs. We laughed a lot and Scott did a great job. Before Scott arrived, Robert and I recorded the rest of the harmony parts for “I Am”. It’s sounding like a very retro 60s thing to me now. This CD is becoming very eclectic. It’s pretty cool.

Video Shoot

This morning we were shooting footage for the music video of my song, “Wakantanka”. My videographer was calling the song, “All of the Beauty Is One” when he was slating the takes. I have a feeling name of the song is about to change. I like the sound of it. Wakantanka isn’t a well known name and a Brit told me the name wasn’t spiritual to him.

We have a fabulous location and my videographer is totally into the whole project as a result. I really thought we were just going to be shooting some background footage for the green screen and maybe a few silhouettes, but after we got to the house he got inspired. So we’re going back tonight to get a lot more footage. He’s got a vision.

It’s really wonderful to have a location for the music video that works so well. I’m taking a break to gather more wardrobe and get some rest before a long night of shooting. His make-up artist is meeting us at the location around 5:30p and I don’t know how late we’ll go. I know there’s a shot with me in the pool that we’ll be doing at the end of the night.

Loving Jesus

I was at church with some friends of mine for Easter. I’m not a big religion girl, but a deal is a deal. They watched “The Secret” with me so I went to church with them. I don’t know why I thought The Secret was something they should see. I thought the production value alone would be interesting to them. But I know why they suggested church.

I know that not all churches are the same, but this one in Woodland Hills had a great energy about it. Everyone was very loving and happy to be there. The pastor drove the point home that God loves all His children and every one of us is precious to God. It felt good to hear the pastor talk about Jesus and what Jesus wants to do for all of us.

I was raised Jewish so I find I have to look past my upbringing to keep an open mind and hear a blessing in the words of a preacher talking about Jesus. Some very close friends of mine totally love Jesus and we’ve had great conversations about God, His Son, the Holy Spirit, and humanity. It’s wonderful that Jesus inspires people in such loving ways.

Inner Heart

I have a song called, “I Am”, that will be on my new CD. I’m working on more harmony parts for it. I was talking with my friend, Sharon Plache, the founder of Peace Flags By Kids, www.peaceflagsbykids.org, about some workshops that she’s been taking lately. The next one is about going to the inner heart. She thought it would interest me.

The lyric to my song starts out, “My heart is my destiny. It’s what life means to me.” Sharon was working with me on inner heart stuff and I realized that my heart really is my destiny, not just in a metaphorical sense. It’s important for me to live from my heart and be connected to my inner heart because that’s where my true joy and happiness are.

It was like a moment of clarity to discover the place inside of my heart that holds infinity. That may sound strange but it’s the only way I can describe it. It was really wonderful to feel that expansion when I was taken there and even more amazing to go through my day today living from that place. I don’t ever remember being as peaceful as I am now.

Recording & A Screening

It was a wonderful time in the studio this week with my producer, Robert Eibach. We recorded harmony vocals for 2 of my songs. It takes some time for me to warm up in a vocal track when I’m recording a harmony part. What makes a harmony work so well is when the inflection in the phrasing is totally matched up. That takes a few takes to get.

I’ve noticed that with every creative project that seems to have a natural flow and rhythm in the final production that there’s quite a bit of fine tuning and redefining that goes on behind the scenes whether it’s in music or film. I was at a screening for a film that’s being released in August and we were watching the 2nd edit with temporary music.

My friend who invited me went over some questions the editor had after we had viewed the film. She wanted to know details about things that we got or didn’t get that were important for us to know in the story. Without knowing what footage is available that was left out, it was a little tough to make suggestions, but I did my best to be constructive.

Abraham-Hicks

I went to a seminar with Esther and Jerry Hicks. Esther shares information with people from a group of non-physical beings that call themselves Abraham. She was featured in the original version of The Secret and then was taken out of it. I don’t know the details of that, but after I got the version with her in it, I was curious to learn more about her work.

I went to their website, www.abraham-hicks.com, and started reading what was on there about the law of attraction and the science of deliberate creation. I saw that they had a seminar scheduled in LA this weekend so I signed up and went. It was really fascinating and I appreciated the candidness with how Abraham spoke through Esther.

Esther has been doing this for over 20 years. There were people at the seminar that had been coming to their workshops for years. Many of them have subscriptions to receive Abraham’s weekly CDs that they listen to all the time. They seemed very happy and shiny in their energy. It was wonderful to be in the present of so much well-being.

Sweet Music

It’s so wonderful being an artist these days. I was in the studio with my producer, Robert Eibach, and we got quite a bit done on my song “Our Love”. It’s my sister’s favorite song of mine that I ever wrote so Robert and I are getting it done next so I can send her a copy of it for her birthday. It makes doing the CD project a lot more meaningful to me.

I also got to play at Universal Bar & Grill last night. It was great to hang with my friend, Sheena Metal, who books me there. It had been awhile since I had played there, so it was awesome to catch up on all our girl talk. It’s the friends I have in the business that make being in the business so fun for me. I need my girlfriends.

It’s really nice to have studio tracks to practice with. It’s improving my chops a bunch. I noticed that when I played last night that I was more relaxed in the pocket. Playing to studio tracks is having perfection at my fingertips. The more I work with them, the better I feel with my songs when I’m playing them and singing. That’s a good thing.

Fred Hawthorne

It’s always a wonderful experience for me when I perform at CAP Theater. Aside from getting to do my thing, I also get the opportunity to meet other artists and see them in action. Last night, I shared the bill with a spoken word artist, Fred Hawthorne. He’s more than just a poet. You can check him out at www.fredhawthorne.com.

I was impressed with his honesty and openness about his feelings and his drive in life. Not many men share deep revelations that easily. I especially appreciated his poetry about women. He understands the value of a woman in love and how to value her. Not many men seem to get that, or at least I haven’t heard any men mention it.

If you get a chance to catch a performance of Fred’s, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. His eloquence with words and his style are very easy to connect to. I always get a warm feeling in my heart when I watch an artist from a completely different background than I had speak their truth. We all talk about the same things from various vantage points.

Busy Week

Lately I’ve had so much going on that I haven’t been writing much. My producer, Robert Eibach, and I recorded the lead vocal for, “Our Love” and “I’d Rather Leave You”. It was fun to record lead vocals again. I’m starting to get the hang of it now. That may sound weird, but singing for a recording is different than anything else.

I have a performance tonight at CAP Theater in Studio City. Lonny Stevens, the Artistic Director at CAP, gave me some blocking for my performance. I’m so used to having a guitar with me on stage and tonight I’ll be singing to studio back-up tracks. I was practicing last night and moving around while singing is a whole new thing for me.

This week, I also got to look at the raw footage we shot for the “Wakantanka” music video. It was rough looking at raw footage of me and that took some getting used to. I don’t know why with all the technology we have that someone hasn’t come up with a camera that doesn’t make a person look 10 lbs. heavier. That would be great.

Video Shooting

It was a fun day of shooting video for my song “Wakantanka”. It was also an early day getting ready. I was at my make-up artist’s place at 8am, got my wardrobe together after that and then went to the studio for the session. I brought a bunch of clothing, jewelry, scarves and shoes and didn’t use very much of it.

I’m always happy to bring a lot of wardrobe for a video shoot, even if I only use a few things. It’s best to give the director different choices. I’m not the best one to decide what looks right or what pieces should go where when it comes to art direction. I’m a songwriter and a performer. A director knows what looks best on camera and on me.

One of the nicest things about the shoot was that I was wearing a shawl that my parents bought for me when they were in Barcelona and some jewelry that a friend gave me for performing. It wrapped me in love and it was great to have that energy with me. My new hair-do was perfect and the director told me it makes me look younger. I like that.

Highlights

Yesterday I went to a new hair artist, named Latisha, and got highlights in my hair. She also gave me the best looking hair cut I’ve ever had. I have really curly hair and not many people know how to cut curly hair. Needless to say, I am incredibly happy. I knew that Latisha would do a nice job on my hair. I’ve seen her work before.

I usually don’t drive long distances for much in my life. Latisha works in Arcadia. That’s about a half hour drive. I’m kind of spoiled. Most of the places I go to do things are 5-10 minutes driving time from where I live in LA. I think that’s one of the greatest things about my life is the convenience factor. And in LA that is a must for me.

I’ve heard that Latisha has clients who fly in from out of town to have their hair done by her. I can understand why. She is wonderful. And I’m excited to have a fresh look for the video we’re shooting next week and for my new CD coming out. The next thing on my list is to go shopping for clothes. I love being a girl.

Drums & Strings

My producer, Robert Eibach, and I were in the studio working on my song “If I Tell You That I Love You”. We had recorded the harmony vocals and Robert was putting in drums and strings. It was amazing to listen to the song be transformed as Robert was adding parts to the song. He’s got such a talent for knowing what makes a song sound right.

That’s why he’s a record producer. Robert told me that Carl Strand, the very gifted guitar player who has recorded beautiful guitar parts on my songs, turned him on to a composer named, Debussy, and that inspired him. Whatever the inspiration, it was wonderful. The strings really touched my heart and enhanced the song so much.

So I’m becoming more in awe of the direction Robert is taking my music to. I really don’t know what people are going to think of my music. I know that I’m grateful and happy that somehow I wound up recording my CD with Robert over at Del Oro Music. So much has changed since we started this project and everything gets better everyday.

Home Sweet Home

Getting home after being away for awhile feels great. My little cat, Macey, was happy to see me. She woke me up throughout the night to give me kisses and rub my face so I could pet her about every hour. When I looked at the clock after the 5th time and saw it was 5am I just had to give her even bigger hugs and kisses. She is so adorable.

I was really happy to see her, too. I truly am in love with my little Macey girl and thought about her a lot while I was away. She has a great babysitter. My friend, Macey’s Aunt Teresa, stays with her while I’m gone. Teresa loves Macey, too. Teresa is a cat person and a vet tech, so it’s nice to know Macey is in good hands. Macey has fun with her.

At the Phoenix airport, I found a really pretty silver flower charm with a light blue heart shaped crystal in the middle of it for the necklace I’m having made for Macey for her 1st birthday. (Her birthday is on St. Patrick’s Day). Light blue is the birthstone color for March. I showed the charm to Macey and she rubbed her face against it. She’s a princess.

Rest

I don’t pride myself on being a workaholic, but I’ve realized on this trip that I rarely take a day off to do nothing. There’s always stuff to do. There are times when I am working 12 or more hours a day, but it’s usually broken up into different areas of my life, so I just consider myself busy. It wasn’t until I really got some rest here that I realized I don’t really rest that much in my regular routine.

Part of how that happens is that I really love what I do on a daily basis. I’m learning a lot, creating, and spending time with fabulous people. I feel so lucky to be where I am that most of the time what I’m doing doesn’t even seem like work to me. And it keeps getting better. It’s cool to be in that kind of energy and I’m very grateful. I’m also grateful that I’m getting a lot of rest while I’m in Tucson. I needed it.

When I get back home I’m back to being busy again. With studio sessions, stylist appointments for photography, video shooting, gigs and other things to take care of, I’m sure March will fly by like a breath of fresh air. It’s fun the way everything comes together with everything . There’s so much magic happening all the time. All the hours, money, energy and space I give to my music is well worth it.

Homeland Security

When I got to the terminal at the Burbank Airport on Monday, I sat down with a cup of tea I had bought and called my mom. While I was on the phone, there was an announcement on the PA telling all passengers in the terminal that everyone had to leave the airport and be re-screened. So everyone filed out in a long line. I was glad I had checked my bag so I could carry my tea and drink it.

Once you leave the airport you can’t bring your drink back in with you even if you did buy it there. And with a few hundred people going through the security gate I was glad to have my tea while I was waiting in line. I had never been evacuated to be re-screened before so it was kind of cool to experience that. I like doing new things. It makes things interesting when something unexpected shows up.

Someone said that someone had walked through the wrong door. Someone else said that one of the scanners wasn’t working right when some people had gone through and that’s why everyone was brought out to be re-screened. I still find it amusing to put my lip glosses in a clear plastic bag in order to go through the gate. I always wear slip on shoes when I travel now because it takes less time. Thank you homeland security.

CAP Theater

I played at CAP Theater last night and had a wonderful time. There were a number of rap artists on the bill as well as Doc Jones. He’s a comedian who also performs around town. He’s got a song he wrote called “The Monkey Song” which is kind of a comedy sex thing. People like the song so much he performed it twice.

One of the things I like about performing at CAP is that in a lot of the shows I get to play in the hip hop/rap/ R&B scene in LA. It’s also fun to share the stage with poets of rhyme and see the response my music gets to different types of audiences. I’ve also shared the bill with singer/songwriters, but the rap nights are the most intriguing to me.

I’m usually the only artist who plays an instrument on stage during a rap night. Last night I did have backing tracks for “Wakantanka” and sang the song to those for the first time. When I hit the stage with a hip hop/rap audience in the house it gives me a chance to crossover into new territory and relate to new people from the heart. I like that a lot.

The Studio

Being in the studio is one of my favorite things to do. My producer, Robert Eibach, and I recorded a harmony vocal track for “Don’t Ask Me Why” last night. Then Robert did some percussion editing and a rough mix. I think that when this CD comes out I’ll be known for harmonies. They make my songs so much more interesting to me.

One of the best things about working with Robert is how much we laugh when we’re in the studio. It’s great to find the humor in what we’re doing and since we’ve been working together for awhile now we have some inside jokes between us that crack us up. It makes the creative process more entertaining and I love the energy that’s going into the songs.

We have rough mixes of 2 more songs done now and Robert said he was going to get them up on my artist page soon. It will be nice to see what kind of response the songs get. We’ll be working on “If I Tell You That I Love You” when I get back into town. I’m going to Tucson for a week on Monday. It’s good to be recording an album.

Learning

I’ve noticed that people learn differently. Some people are quick studies and other people are slower to catch on. Sometimes what I find the determining factor with someone’s ability to learn is whether or not they feel good about what they’re doing, the role that they’re in, and what they think they’re going to get out of the situation.

Those determining factors give a person their self-esteem in a situation. I find that when I don’t really have set expectations with a specific agenda I’m usually happier with what I’m doing. I can focus on how nice people are, what I’m learning, how things work and fit together and why I’m there.

There’s always a bigger picture going on then what got me in a room to begin with. It’s always in hind sight that I can see the connections that were made because I showed up somewhere. I met one of my best friends at a conference where I went by myself and didn’t know anyone. Jobs that I’ve had have led me to things I never would have done.

Selling

I appreciate when people who are selling something are honest about what they’re selling. I’ve heard sales people say that they can sell more when they tell people what they want to hear. I want to hear the truth, but I guess that isn’t what some sales people think I want to hear. They’re short term approach doesn’t create long lasting stuff.

I find that when I’m honest about what I’m talking about there is more credibility to what I have to say. If I find that someone hasn’t been honest with me and comes back with a bunch of back end things that weren’t part of the picture, I get turned off. I also won’t include them in future stuff because of what transpired. I’m stubborn like that.

The emotional hot button techniques that people use can be effective, but they usually create “buyer’s remorse” and lose me. When I hear people say, “If it sounds too good to be true” with the usual yada yada yada afterwards I also get turned off. I believe in miracles. I believe in great things happening and great opportunities. I work for them.

The Secret Again

I watched The Secret with a group of inspiring women tonight and participated in a lively conversation afterwards. It was great to share insights about the film, the ideas presented and different life experiences with people I don’t really know. It’s fun to be in a room of new people and find that I have so much in common with them.

I really like the DVD and I’m glad it was made. This was the first version of the film with Ester Hicks. I saw the second version the first time I saw it and she isn’t in that one. It was different and I really liked what she had to say and the way she said it. I got a lot out of watching both versions of the film. It’s good information for me.

Each time I watch the film I get new ideas and new insights about my life. That makes me happy. I think deep down I’ve known the secret but never had a clear vision of how to live within the law of attraction the way it is presented in the film. I enjoy the feeling I have after seeing it and how things are happening now.

I remember when “What the Bleep Do We Know” came out and it was a big relief for me to see the information released in theaters. I’m a big fan of quantum physics and quantum mechanics. I’m no expert but I am always energized when the topic is discussed by people who are. It feels good to hear the truth and I’m all for living it.

The Dart Room

I just got back from playing The Dart Room at Michael’s Pub in North Hollywood. What I love about the Dart Room is how easy it is to be in. It’s important for me to have a place to “work out” as an artist and Michael’s Pub is a great room for that. The locals at the bar are also very sweet to me and supportive when I play there. I appreciate that a lot.

While I’m recording my new CD, I need to keep my performance chops fresh. I’m lucky to have Michael’s Pub as a regular venue for my craft. I get to try out new things, practice what I’ve been doing in the studio on vocals, and focus on what being an artist is really about for me while I’m on stage. I need to remember what I’m here for.

When my CD is finished and I have a product to sell, I’ll be venturing out more. For now, my North Hollywood and Studio City gigs are perfect for what I’m doing. We finished the rough mix on “Bright Blue Skies” this week and that feels good. I like the vibe of the song. We should have another 2 songs done next month. That will be nice.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Considering the amount of consumer goods that are produced for Valentine’s Day, it surprises me how many people I know who don’t celebrate the holiday. I eat chocolate everyday, so the heart shaped chocolate candy isn’t a big thrill. I’m into my organic “as dark as I can get it” chocolate bars. I’m so glad dark chocolate is healthy. I love that!

The darkest chocolate bars I’ve found have 83% cocoa, but the bars aren’t organic. I like the flavor of organic better. Or maybe it’s just a psychological thing for me. Organic sounds even healthier. I like the serotonin effect eating chocolate has. I remember when I was young and my dad took me out to have a chocolate phosphate. I didn’t get it then.

Now most anything chocolate is on my list of “good things in my life”. I’m into gratitude. The happiest people I know are people who love what they have and what they get. They also seem to be the wealthiest to me because they exude abundance. I enjoy having a reason to celebrate what I love in my life and Valentine’s Day reminds me to do that.

Harmonies

I was in the studio recording a harmony vocal for my love song, “If I Tell You That I Love You” with my producer, Robert Eibach. Robert was so awesome. With the traveling I’ve been doing and other stuff going on, I really hadn’t had a chance to work out the harmony very well, so I just came in with a harmony part for the whole song.

Robert helped fine tune where the harmony was good and where to drop it. Usually when I have time, I’m able to get to that point, but things have been busy for me. When we finished recording the part, I was really happy with how it sounded. I like it when a harmony is pretty for a love song. I may do another part, but for now this one is good.

After we finished the harmony work, Robert crafted the editing on “Bright Blue Skies”. We added in some finger snaps and a shaker loop. The rough mix sounds cool. At least to me it does. Robert thinks it has a beatnik sound to it. It reminds me of bluegrass with a twist of old blues and retro harmonies. This album will be eclectic for sure.

El Paso

I’m flying to El Paso, TX to check out the area. Apparently it’s a good place to buy real estate these days. For the price of a townhouse in Studio City, you can buy 4 single family homes in El Paso. It reminds me of the first time I walked around Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills and saw a skirt for $1700. I usually buy skirts for $6.

It’s kind of amazing how different markets are priced. El Paso is supposed to be a cool area. The military base is a pretty huge deal down there. My friend told me that I should get fajitas when I told her I was going to get some BBQ while I was in Texas. She said that around that part of the state, fajitas are the way to go. I’ll be fajita shopping.

It’s going to be a short trip. I’ll be staying over one night and spending the day checking out the new development in and around town before I fly back. The weather should be nice. It will be a little warmer than LA. It’s supposed to be cloudy. Clouds are beautiful. I’ve always loved clouds. I used to play with them when my dad took my flying as a kid.

The Soul of Country

I love when my week is filled with music. I was in the studio with my producer, Robert Eibach, recording harmonies for “Bright Blue Skies” on Tuesday and had a blast. It is really fabulous working with him. And tonight I was at The Grammy Foundation’s Music Preservation Project presentation of The Soul of Country.

It was fabulous to watch the footage they put together of great performers, songwriter interviews and former President Richard Nixon playing the piano on the opening night of the Grand Ole Opry when they moved to Opryland in the 70’s. It inspired me a lot to hear so many great songs and stories about country music.

It was also amazing to hear LeAnn Rimes, Deana Carter, Shooter Jennings, Joe Nichols, Charley Pride, Marty Stuart, and Porter Wagner sing and do what they do best. I saw a friend of mine at the reception afterwards who is also a member of the Recording Academy. He was at a Television Academy event I was at once, too. I love being in LA.

Free Money

I just opened an ING direct savings account because they sent me a $25 bonus for doing so. I’m also getting a good savings rate. My financial planner told me they’re a reputable company. Another friend, who is an escrow officer, has an account with them and is pretty happy with their deal. He did tell me to plan ahead if I need to get my money out.

It’s nice to have a savings account set up that compounds interest and accumulates money. I enjoy seeing my money grow. I also love doing things that make my financial life better. There are a lot of advantages to saving rather then spending. Investing in my life has always paid off. I’m investing in my future and loving the results.

I was talking to a guy today who told me that he’s been buying cars and shoes with his money for the last 5 years and now he is buying real estate instead. That sounded like a better idea. I do love great shoes and nice cars are fun, but I dig property more. I also like having big bank accounts and assets. It’s a practical mentality for me and fun.

Bargain Shopping

I took a friend to my favorite thrift store for some bargain shopping. I was in the mood for some new clothes and she needed a couch. She found a sofa and got a great price on it with delivery. When it was moved into her apartment she found out it’s a sofa sleeper. Score, big time! She’s excited. She also got some clothes for next to nothing, too.

I’m happy because I got 2 skirts, a dress, a cardigan and 2 tank tops for $25. The dress I need for a trip I’m taking to Tampa, FL this week. It will also be an awesome summer dress for the stage. I love buying pretty girly clothes. It’s my thing now. I kind of grew into girly stuff as an adult. It wasn’t my thing when I was younger.

Thrift shopping in LA is the best. I find mostly designer clothes that are practically new and quite a few items that still have the tags on. I live a life of total luxury here and it’s fun to be fabulously dressed all the time. Life is good. I have a song by that title going on my new album. I’m going to play it at my next show just for grins.

Paws

My little cat Macey, likes to use her paws to pick things up. She’s got a lot of dexterity for a cat. It’s very sweet to watch her play with things. She likes to take the stones out of my bamboo plants’ pots. I’m not sure what the fascination is with her on that, but she picks out stones and keeps pretty busy playing with them for awhile.

I’m sure she has a stash of stones and play toys somewhere in my apartment. A lot of her toys are out of sight. She does keep a few ribbons around that she particularly likes. One of her favorite things is to bring her silver elastic string with her wherever I am in the apartment. If she was a kid I would say that the string is her “blanket”.

She’s taken to giving me massages with her paws at night and in the morning when I’m laying down. Sometimes she wakes me up in the middle of the night when she lays down on my head. She’s a mama’s girl. Macey will be a year old on St. Patrick’s Day. She’s growing into a very cool cat and still has that cute kitten thing going on.

I was at a gathering to watch “The Secret” and it was wonderful to be in the energy of that film. This was the 2nd time that I was given the opportunity to view the film this month. I am obviously in tune with the law of attraction and making my life here absolute Heaven of Earth. If you haven’t seen “The Secret” you may want to check it out.

I’m focused on feeling great, being happy with what I have, being grateful for what I receive and allowing myself to go through changes and growth with willingness, appreciation and love. The happiness I experience on a regular basis while I’m doing that is fabulous. I like how “The Secret” illustrates how anyone can do it, too.

Reminders and repetition are good for me when I’m exploring new ground, achieving my goals, and receiving beautiful gifts, and finding miracles and wonder all around me. I love the feeling of it and the magic of it all. What I love about “The Secret” is that it puts the process into simple terms and makes it very accessible to everyone who wants it.

Robert Eibach

It’s interesting to me how much more talented I sound in my recordings because I’m working in the studio with Robert Eibach. I’ve been listening to my song “Wakantanka” and the rough mix of “Bright Blue Skies”. Next week I’m laying down a harmony track for “Bright Blue Skies” so I’ve been going over the song and listening to “Wakantanka”.

It’s not that I didn’t feel a strong energy when I sang “Wakantanka” before. It’s just that now that Robert has produced the song, it’s like there’s a vibe there that brings out the heart of the song and my soul feels good when I hear that on the single. “Bright Blue Skies” isn’t finished yet, but the way Robert is putting together everything is awesome.

It helps to have such great musicians as Carl Strand, Scott Riedle and Eddie Rouse playing on the tracks. But it’s Robert’s editing and overall style of arrangement that is making these songs really special. I’m very lucky to be recording my album with Robert Eibach. I know any success I have commercially is due to my collaboration with him.

Perpetual Motion

Sometimes it seems like even when I rest I’m still really busy and doing a lot. I’m home relaxing now. I was out running some errands. I like shopping after dark. There’s something magical about it for me. Not that I don’t enjoy shopping anytime of day, it’s just the night energy in a store strikes me as something special.

My cat is happy to have me home. She is getting more adorable the longer I have her in my life. I recently ordered a book which came with a lot of extras. I don’t when I’ll have time to even look at the material. I’m not complaining. I love my life and what I do. The people who I spend time with are precious. There’s just so much to do in a day.

I’m getting pretty good at being in perpetual motion. It’s almost like a meditation. The groove is on and I’m in it. I’ve noticed that the more I do the more I’m able to do. I don’t know why that is, it’s just what’s happening. I guess the best part for me is watching how things unfold rather than trying to influence results. Life can be fascinating.

Divorce

I know of a couple of marriages of about 20 years that are both going through a divorce. My heart goes out to them. What I’ve noticed is that the women involved seem to be really angry and disappointed and the men appear to be very stoic and unaffected. Maybe they act like that around me because I’m a younger woman, but it’s pretty sad.

One woman told me that while divorce isn’t great, it’s better than being miserable. The other one told me that there have been problems with her husband for awhile and she finally got to the point where she had enough. I’ve been reading about the differences between men and women and what works and what doesn’t in relationships.

I’ve just started doing my “field testing” with the information, so I’m on new territory right now. I know that there are very happily married couples that stay together for the long run and most people would like to be able to do that with a soul mate. I’ve learned a lot in every experience I’ve had with people and I’m sure that will continue.

Cat Outings

My little cat, Macey, needs more to do. She ran out of my apartment the other night, when it was really cold, to check out the parking lot for a romp. I wasn’t particularly happy that she was running under cars and not coming to me when I wanted to go inside. It took some time before she was ready for me to pick her up to go home.

Aside from the hassle of chasing her down, she had schmootz on her paws and face from being under cars and rubbing against tires. I had to put olive oil on her paws so she could get clean. Soap and water didn’t work. I decided that it would be best for me to take her with me on little trips outside the apartment so she isn’t bored and won’t run outside.

Today we went to visit my friend, Sylvia, in her new place. Sylvia sold her house recently and is getting used to apartment living. Macey likes being in her pet carrier, but was meowing a lot on the drive over there. She was shy and not too thrilled to be in a strange place, but was still cute. Next week, I’ll try taking her to the store with me.

Universal Bar & Grill

I was with my friend, Marie, at my gig last night at Universal Bar & Grill. We had so much fun. We ate dinner before my set and watched the end of the Lakers’ basketball game. The Lakers lost. I’m not much of a basketball fan anymore. I like the food at UBG. I hadn’t eaten much during the day, so I was pretty hungry when we ordered.

It’s been awhile since I’ve eaten a full meal before singing and I forgot how interesting it is to breathe and support notes when my body is digesting a bunch of food. I’m used to multi-tasking, being a girl and all, but I prefer not to be multi-tasking with that combo when I’m on stage. I was still happy with the dinner. Next time I’ll eat earlier.

They put a new fireplace in the dining area and it was nice to sit by the fire and eat. I’m a fire sign and I love being by open flames. I also like being warm. I’ve been wearing long underwear and wool sweaters a lot this winter. Even when the sun is out and the temperatures go up, I still bundle up in layers. I stay healthier when I do that, so I do.

Mystic Fire Topaz

I was at Target today with a gift card to use. I love gift card shopping. It’s so much fun. I found these great round mystic fire topaz earrings and bought them. I’m into jewelry and mystic fire topaz is a really interesting gem stone. It reflects a lot of colors. I love that topaz comes in all kinds of colors because topaz is my birthstone and I love variety.

There was also a platinum topaz pendant in the case. I had never seen one of those. It was a very pretty stone, but I wear a pink topaz pendant and can always use a great pair of earrings, so I opted for those instead. I read on a spiritual website that topaz is a stone for manifesting your heart’s desire. I thought that was cool.

I like other gem stones as well. I remember there was a print ad I saw a number of years ago with a picture of Lauren Bacall in it. It said, “When he asks if you prefer rubies, emeralds, sapphires, diamonds or gold, look him straight in the eye and say, ‘Yes’.” That ad pretty much sums it up for me.

Gigs

It’s so much fun to play gigs. I performed at Michael’s Pub on Friday night and had a wonderful time with Gypsy Blak and the people who came up for the show. That was so nice! This week I get to play at Universal Bar & Grill on Thursday. It’s always great to play there and hang with my friend, Sheena Metal. And I do love their French fries.

I also will be back at CAP Theater on February 24th. I adore that little place. Lonny and Alex, the guys who run the place, have been a great help to me in developing my craft as an artist. I did some acting training with Lonny and that opened up a whole new thing in my work. It’s special for me every time I play there.

It’s great to have these 3 venues as my regular gigs in town. I’m very grateful that I can work with such wonderful people. I need to be playing out to keep my chops up. It also helps me do better in the studio when it comes time to record. My living room is good for getting material together. Gigs are the place to get the songs down and see what works.

Ceiling Fans

Today my closet was cleaned up and painted from the water damage that happened after Christmas. The management also put a new ceiling fan in my living room for me, which is great. It’s nice to be able to have fans running to circulate the air in my place. It looks cool, too. I love ceiling fans.

Now I have 2 ceiling fans in my living room. The light fixtures that were in my place before weren’t the best. One had to be replaced and they put a fan in for me. It was hard to change the light bulbs on the old fixture when they had burnt out so the maintenance guy would come in to do that for me. Now I can change the bulbs easily. I like easy.

It’s a nice change to have 2 fans in my place. I love the look of it. I’m also very excited to get all my stuff back in the walk-in closet and get my place organized again. It’s been a little tough having everything out of place. I can say that it’s given me some new ideas on how to organize my stuff differently.

Mixing In The Studio

My producer, Robert Eibach, and I were in the studio mixing my first single, “Wakantanka” and had a really good time. He did some editing first and then made everything sound right. Robert has a great ear for getting a great mix. It’s cool to be listening to the song with all the parts in it now.

The song will be mastered soon and that will be so cool to hear. This is the best sounding recording I’ve ever had done of my material and it’s not even mastered yet. It feels good to be doing this project. Working with Robert is such a treat, too. He has a fun sense of humor and we work really well together. That helps a lot.

I’m excited to see what happens when the song is shopped around. This is my first commercial release. I feel like a real grown-up artist now having a real produced record. It also feels really good to have “Wakantanka” be the first single that’s being released. I love that song. It’s the reason I started recording this album in the first place.

My Movie

A friend was talking to me about choices that we make in our experiences. She said that in the book, “The Jesus Code” there’s a lesson that discusses different levels that are available for us to choose in what we are going through in life. That made sense to me. I used to look at my life as a movie I was in.

My life movie genre now is “Heavenly Bliss”. I’m not a “Horror” kind of girl. I was doing “Intense Drama” for a period of time when I didn’t know I could use another movie to be in. When I got the notion that I could do something different, I went for “Romantic Comedy”. I thought it would be fun. It’s a little too neurotic for me.

When I decided that “Heavenly Bliss” was more suited to my taste a lot of my perceptions shifted pretty significantly. That made my life easier. It’s funny when I talk about things happening in my life with people in different movie genres. The “Drama” people react with really intense words and visuals. I prefer “Heavenly Bliss”.

Car Stuff

I took my car over to the shop today to get new front brakes and rotors. It’s always good to take care of my car. Next month my car will get a new axle and some other minor things done. It’s worth it. My car is reliable when I keep up on its maintenance. And my car always seems happy when I pick it up from the shop.

I’m the original owner of my 1989 Honda Civic. It’s a great little car and has been with me in 4 of the United States and taken me on many a road trip. I know there are nicer, newer cars out there, but I like having a car that’s paid for. And it’s been such a great car for me in my life. It’s not fancy, but it’s perfect for what I need.

Having my car in the shop also gives me a chance to kick back and stay home. It’s a nice break from the schedule I’ve had lately. With my apartment being upside down from the flooding my neighbors caused, I haven’t really been home much. It will be nice to have my apartment put back together again. I do much better with order in my life.

Patterns

I’ve found my self in a pattern with a friend. It’s not one of those good feeling ones, but it’s pretty well established in both of us. We had a talk today and I found out that we are mirroring each other in our feelings and the feelings are about not being appreciated or acknowledged and not being seen in the light that we would like to be.

When I listened to my friend talk about how she felt I was amazed at how exact her feelings matched mine. Another friend of mine once told me, “If you spot it, you got it.” In this case that apparently is true. So after I listened to my friend describe this pattern I was inspired to turn this situation into an opportunity rather than a problem.

I told my friend that we are in a pattern together and I would like to work with her to heal this pattern and create something new. I mentioned that we can change this and it will take some effort, but I would like to do this with her if she is open to the idea. This pattern has been hurting her for some time, so she agreed. We are on a new course.

Back to the Studio

Tonight I’ll be back in the studio with my producer, Robert Eibach, www.myspace.com/roberteibach, to record some lead vocals and then Scott Riedle is coming in to record bass tracks for some songs. It will be a good night in the big room. It’s always a treat to be collaborating.

Del Oro Music recording artist, April Diamond, is also going to come by for the session. She is an amazing artist and fabulous vocalist. She’s going to be adding her magic to “Bright Blue Skies”. I’m not sure when we’ll be getting to that, but I imagine it will be soon. It’s an honor to work with such talented people.

I love being in the studio, even for editing sessions. The process is fascinating. It’s also really cool to hear what is happening to my songs. Some of the songs on my album have been in my life for many years and this is the first time they’re getting all the fixings on them. I’m happy to be doing this for my music. It’s a good thing to do.

Day 2

I can tell that 2007 is going to be a great year. I was out early with my boyfriend and saw the full moon getting ready to set in the sky this morning. It was beautiful! Usually if I’m up this early I’m not out driving anywhere. It’s the second day of 2007 and I’ve already seen something that I hadn’t experienced before.

I know that the moon setting in the sky is nothing new to the moon. The moon sets everyday the way the sun sets in the sky. I just don’t usually see it. I’m up and around for the moonrise pretty much everyday. I’m used to seeing the moon in the Eastern sky. Seeing the moon shining in the West seemed like a new beginning for me.

Maybe this will be a year of completion for me, seeing the other slice of life that I usually wasn’t around for. That would be cool. There are some things that I would like to be able to experience that I haven’t had the opportunity to yet. There are so many things that go on in life. I feel like I’m starting to see what life is really about.

Happy New Year!

2006 was a year of change and growth for me. And it’s really cool to be starting 2007 with so much good stuff going on. I got to end the year right by playing a gig at Universal Bar & Grill in North Hollywood and then meeting up with some friends at a party to bring in the New Year and drink some bubbly, (sparkling apple juice for me.)

I felt very festive wearing a red Happy New Year tiara that matched my dress. I love being color coordinated. And it was great to play my happy songs and bounce to the beat on stage. Universal Bar & Grill is a fun room and what makes it even more fun is getting to see my friend Sheena Metal when I play there.

After my set, Danielle Egnew hit the stage. She is a wonderful performer and a dynamic singer. While she is very comfortable in her rock genre, I’ve also seen her freestyle original songs in the moment with any beat and captivate her audience with her thought process. I love watching her in her craft. She is a true artist and a marvel to behold.

Shopping

I don’t know if it’s a girl thing, but I really do like shopping. It doesn’t even matter what I’m going shopping for. A trip to the store for toilet paper makes me smile. Probably because I usually find things I didn’t know I needed that are so conveniently placed in the isles for me to buy. And I love finding new things.

I also find that there are certain stores where I buy certain things, even if I’m in a store that carries the same item. I don’t know why I’m like that. It’s just how I am. Some stores just work for me and others don’t. It takes a really good reason or a great recommendation from a friend to get me into a new place. I’m a creature of habit.

That’s probably what gives me the ability to perform the same songs on a regular basis. It’s just habit for me at this point. I do like getting dressed for a gig. I like having a reason to wear glam gowns and dresses with heels and lipstick. I’m a girl and I like girly things. And I find that it’s more fun being a girl when I do what a girl can do.

Ending the Year

It’s always nice to get to the end of a year and look back to what I was doing a year ago at this time to see what has changed. I usually look back at my calendar to see what I was up to. Performing was on my calendar quite a bit. I also was writing a lot. This year I started recording my new CD and that was on the top of my “to do” goal list.

I usually write goals out for the upcoming year sometime in December. I’ll be writing my goals out tomorrow. I started my prayer request in my newsletter at the end of last year. The first two prayer sections were dedicated to people’s goals. It’s fun to see how my goals influenced my activity for the year when I look back on them.

This year my goals are much simpler. Being a gentle, kinder being is one of the things on my list year after year. That’s because a man came in to a store I worked at one night and his presence alone changed how I felt. I don’t think he said more than 10 words and wasn’t in the store long either. But what he was in himself was amazing to behold.

Closet Work

This is a follow up to my plumbing situation. The problems in the apartment upstairs from me have been fixed. There was a lot of water in my lighting fixture in the closet after the work was all done. So the owner’s husband took care of that. We had a bucket in the closet to make sure there weren’t any further pipe problems.

There wasn’t any water coming in this morning, so now they can repair the damage in the closet. I was told that would be done sometime before the end of next week. It will be a few weeks before they replace the living room floor. The maintenance guy is out of town. This will be the second new floor that I’m getting in this apartment since I’ve lived here.

My cat, Macey, is having a good time with all the stuff out of the closet. For her it’s like a jungle gym of excitement to have so many things to explore. I’ve been sleeping at my boyfriend’s place since my clothes are all on my bed and there’s no place for me to sleep while this is going on. He’s made going through this a lot easier.

Plumbing

I really do like indoor plumbing. And I know from experience that when plumbing issues happen it’s best to take care of them immediately. Apparently my neighbors upstairs weren’t aware of this because they didn’t bother telling the manager in our building that they were having plumbing problems for about 2 weeks.

I know about this because when I came home this evening there was water on my living room floor and my walk-in closet has water dripping from the light fixture. There was also quite a bit of water on the floor in there as well. I’m taking a break from emptying out my closet and throwing out the stuff with water damage.

Cleaning out that closet was on my list of things to do after Christmas. I just didn’t know I would be doing it so soon or that I would be getting rid of so many things. I’m glad it’s warmer out tonight than it’s been lately. That’s a plus. The plumber will be here to fix everything in the morning. So much for that relaxing evening I was going to have.

Merry Christmas!

Ho! Ho! Ho! It’s a beautiful day in LA and what a great Christmas! I love being in LA for the holidays. So many people leave town and it’s really quiet around here. Without the hustle and bustle it’s easy to relax and kick back. We’re going to my friend’s house later to celebrate, so I’m appreciating the calm now.

We were catching some of the Christmas stuff on TV earlier. A lot of choir singing. The Disney World parade was pretty cool. I guess if you have kids going to Disney World for Christmas would be fun. It’s a magical place. I was looking at the performers all dressed up in costumes. That must be a tough job after awhile.

My favorite of all the shows we saw was one about tacky Christmas lights. It was on last night and showed a bunch of homes in Richmond, VA that had hundreds of thousands of lights and decorations for Christmas. It took them more than a month to put all the stuff up. It was pretty impressive. Seemed like a lot of work to me, but that’s me.

T'was The Night...

Christmas Eve is always a wonderful night. There’s plenty of chocolate around, all the Christmas gifts are wrapped and dinner will be special. I used to love watching the Christmas specials on TV. Rudolph, Frosty, and The Grinch are still shows I enjoy. I also have watched a lot of Disney stuff over and over again. I’m just a kid at heart.

Tonight will be a quiet night at home. Tomorrow will be very social with lots of great food. I love holiday eating! Even the grocery stores have a big selection of holiday fare. I guess that’s what makes the food special, because it’s for the holidays. Of course, my Jewish upbringing probably has something to do with my food focus.

Other than Yom Kippur, most Jewish holidays are celebrations surrounded by food. Luckily I learned about nutrition and holistic health. That keeps my holiday eating at a reasonable pace. There are some very healthy things to eat during this season, so I do eat those. I like the gift giving part of Christmas. Everyone is happier doing that.

Rock N' Roll Sushi

My friend, Leslie, celebrated her 40th birthday with a rock n’ roll sushi party. I had never been to a rock n’ roll sushi place before. Bright lights, loud music and people getting rowdy reminded me of my old bar days. Leslie was having a great time and that was awesome to see. I think she knows every song from the 80’s.

It was fun to watch people standing on chairs singing to the music. The wait staff got everyone in the restaurant up to do the chicken dance. That was a nice break between courses. The food was pretty good. I’ve had better sushi, but not with as much excitement going on. Usually the restaurants I go to are fairly low key.

The holiday decorations they had in the room were pretty. I love Christmas lights. I found myself kind of mesmerized with everything at times. It was great to celebrate Leslie’s birthday with her. It’s wonderful when I get to share events in my friends’ lives. It’s sharing things with others that makes things special in my life.

Universal Bar & Grill

I played a gig at Universal Bar & Grill last night and it was fun to play. It’s a great room for me. I’ve been playing shows there for over a year now. Sheena Metal books me for shows there. She used to book some nights over at Moonshadows over in North Hollywood and I played there for her as well.

It’s very cool to play the same room on a regular basis. It makes performing very comfortable. It’s important to be comfortable on stage. The audience is comfortable when the performer is comfortable and has fun when the performer they’re watching is having fun. It takes practice to get comfortable as a performer, or at least it has for me.

I’m a pretty shy person and performing in front of people has been something I had to get used to. I remember when I was little, my aunt Gerry used to tell me to sing for people because I could carry a tune. It made me cringe and I hated it. It’s funny that now I’m driven to sing for people quite a bit and I’m recording an album.

Bass Tracks

My producer, Robert Eibach and I were in the studio working on the CD. Robert put together a CD for Scott Riedle, the bass player who is coming in to record on my songs.
We’ve got 8 more songs for him to record bass parts for. In a couple of weeks, Scott will come in for a session to get the next 4 done.

It’s really nice to have Scott playing on the record. We first got together playing music when we both lived in Tucson. It’s nice to have him playing on the record. Scott is also a great guitar player, so he may do some guitar work as well. Robert hasn’t heard any of Scott’s guitar work yet, so we’ll see how things go.

Robert also worked on the drums for “Bright Blue Skies”. That song is coming together nicely. I have some harmony vocals to record for it and Del Oro Music recording artist, April Diamond, is going to add some vocals on it as well. Robert is an awesome producer and I’m really grateful that I’m recording this project with him.

I’ve been given home-made caramel corn, zucchini bread, chocolates and candy canes so far for Christmas. My friend shared some of the Christmas cookies he got with me as well. I usually don’t have much of a sweet tooth, but I’m finding it easy to enjoy the holiday goodies that come my way. So far the Christmas cookies are my favorite.

I had one of the best sugar cookies I had ever eaten last night at a party. I’m not eating big meals these days, so the sweet treats don’t weigh me down. A few small meals with some kind of protein and vegetables work well for me. I’m drinking a lot of hot drinks because it’s been cold lately and plenty of water. That keeps my voice in shape.

I’m thinking that instead of my monthly ice cream indulgence for the holidays I may have to go for another piece of fresh banana cream pie. I was at a Christmas caroling dinner over the weekend and that was my dessert. I had forgotten how much I like whipped cream. I’ll have to forget about that real soon.

Happy Hanukkah!

I don’t know why I seem to be more in the Christmas spirit this year than Hanukkah. Maybe it’s because I haven’t eaten any potato latkes yet. Those are potato pancakes for those who aren’t familiar with the tradition. I haven’t been in the mood for a powder sugar covered jelly donut either. The Israelis I know eat those for Hanukkah.

This year I have more Christmas stuff going on than Hanukkah stuff. I’m playing at Sheena Metal’s Christmas party at Universal Bar & Grill in north Hollywood, 9p on December 21st. I’m even going to play the Christmas song I wrote. Every Jewish songwriter needs to write a Christmas song in my opinion. The best ones are by Jews.

I do like the candle lighting during Hanukkah. Hanukkiahs are pretty. But with a cat who likes to get into everything I’m doing, leaving a bunch of lit candles in the window sill may not work out so well. When Macey gets older, I’m sure she’ll be more laid back about new stuff in the house. Just about everything is a play toy to her at this point.

The Red Carpet

Last night my friend, Lance, and I went to TinselRock on December 15th at the Key Club in Hollywood to see Del Oro Music recording artists David Longoria, Juliet B. Rock, and April Diamond in concert. I’m recording my album with Del Oro Music so I was excited to see my fellow artists on stage. When we got there, I was invited to walk the Red Carpet.

I was glad I was wearing a great dress. It was such an honor to be asked. My buddy, radio personality, Bradley Quick, was interviewing the celebrities so that made it even cooler. This was my first ever walk on the Red Carpet. I pretended to be a celebrity on a red carpet once when I was at an event while it was being set up. This was even better.

Lance walked with me and he thought it was pretty cool. The show was a lot of fun and the music was awesome! Juliet B. Rock has a rockin’ band and the perfect voice for a rock star. April Diamond had everyone bopping to her beats. And David Longoria’s 17 piece band filled the stage with magic. I love being an artist with Del Oro Music.

Sentimental Value

When my mom and dad were on their honeymoon, 51 years ago, they bought a round amethyst. It’s a pretty stone. When I was in high school, I found a setting for the stone and had a ring made for my mom. When I was in Tucson my mom gave me the ring for my birthday. I’ve been wearing it everyday.

The ring looks good on my finger. It makes me feel good to wear it because it’s a stone my parents bought when they first got married. There’s something special about that for me. It feels like it’s bringing me good luck. Amethyst is a stone for spirituality and strength. I don’t know that I feel stronger wearing it, it just reminds me of my parents.

I’m not one of those people who collects a lot of stuff. I moved a lot in my twenties and I learned to keep my possessions down to a minimum. I have more space where I live when I don’t have lots of stuff. Every year or so I go through my things and give a lot away. I like things to be simple. Life is so much easier that way.

Happy On The Inside

I have a friend who makes a lot of money and she is always complaining that she doesn’t have enough. Maybe she’s trying to fix how she feels on the inside with stuff on the outside. I remember awhile back I was talking to someone who gives me great advice about getting a new car. She told me a new car wouldn’t fix me. She was right.

My car is perfect for me. It’s paid for and easy to maintain. It’s reliable, gets me where I need to go and is comfortable. I know I would look fabulous driving a hot little sports car, so maybe one day I’ll get one. The truth is that I look fabulous driving my Honda civic. I’m happy and happy people look fabulous. Have you noticed that?

I heard once that happiness is about wanting what you already have. I love what I have in my life. I love what I get to do with the people I spend time with. I love my cat, Macey. She is such a wonderful kitty. I love where I live, where I shop, what I buy and what I eat on any given day. What do you love about your life?

Song Choices

My producer, Robert Eibach, and I were in the studio and went over all the songs for the album. We have 14 basic tracks done, so Robert picked out 2 to put on the back burner. It’s good to have choices. I don’t know which songs of mine are the right ones for the CD. I wrote them and have a special relationship with all of them.

I’m happy with the choices Robert made. One of the songs he picked to hold off on is one that I’m going to be re-working a bit. My sister gave me some great feedback when I was with my family in Tucson. She’s always been a fabulous director and has given good suggestions before. I run that stuff by Robert now since he is a professional producer.

I’ve got some rehearsing to do for some lead vocal recording we’ll be doing for the love songs we just got working on. I’ve got a gig on Saturday, so I’ll be able to play thru them during my show. Live performance is the best rehearsal for me. It’s tons of fun and gives me a chance to work things out. I’ll still be singing in my living room. That works, too.

Layers

Today I got one of those bone chills and no amount of heat was going to be enough. So I went to my closet and pulled out long underwear to put on under my jeans, and 3 long sleeve tops to put on under my jacket. I also added a scarf, mittens, and sheepskin lined shoes. I was toasty and very happy. Staying warm is a top priority for my health.

I learned to be a layer queen when I lived in the mountains in Telluride, CO. I had experienced a lot of cold weather before, growing up in Chicago, but being at 8,750 ft. gave me a new definition for chilly. I’m glad I know how to layer for warmth and comfort. I have a gig on Saturday night and I need to have my voice for the show.

This is the first time that I’ve pulled out long underwear in LA. I’m glad I have some. Other people I know are very comfortable with a chill in the air and don’t need a lot of extra clothing. That’s just not how my body is today. I’m going to be adding a lot of hot soup to my meals now that winter is kicking into gear. Mmm, mmm, good.

Sex Trafficking

My friend, Sharon Plache, www.myspace.com/peaceflags, invited me to join her at the UN Film Festival at the American Film Institute in Hollywood. The subject of the documentaries I saw were about modern day slavery, other wise known as sex trafficking. It’s a worldwide issue and very much alive in the United States.

Cargo: Innocence Lost is filmmaker, Michael Cory Davis’ 2nd film covering the topic of sex trafficking. His first film, Svetlana’s Journey, was inspired by a young girl he met at an orphanage in Bulgaria when he was working on a project. Svetlana survived her experience of being sold into prostitution and her story changed Michael’s life.

What I find sad is that these girls that are forced into prostitution typically have sex with 15-30 men a day. So my question is, if these men knew that the girls they are paying for are engaged in sex with so many other men on a daily basis and that these girls are seriously abused when they are brought into this trade, would they still be clients?

Cat Toys

I’ve tried to let my little cat, Macey, know that plants are not kitty toys. She doesn’t seem to be getting it. I have a small jade plant that is slowly being taken apart. She likes to get in the pots of my bigger plants. Maybe it’s a jungle adventure she’s going for. I’m not sure. She does look really cute when she’s sitting in a plant looking stealth.

When I’m working on my computer, she finds everything on my desk very important to play with. She likes walking across my keyboard when I’m writing. It just makes me laugh. I pick her up and give her big hugs when she does that. I’ll put her in my lap and pet her for a bit and then she’s off and running to find something else to play with.

I was told when I got her that she was very mellow and didn’t really like to play. She is pretty mellow, but she loves to play. She likes ribbons and bows a lot. In the morning she’ll bring her ribbon with her onto my bed and play on my legs. I did buy her some cat toys but those don’t seem to be as interesting to her as my stuff. She must love me.

Blue Glass

I picked up some cobalt blue glass water glasses, bowls and a couple of platters today at an estate sale. It was fun to look around. I love colored glass. My parents used to take me with them to glass art shows when I was still living in Chicago. There’s something magical about glass: Maybe because glass shimmers in the light.

I also like using glass dishes better than anything else. It’s cleaner to eat off of than ceramic for me. I used to like ceramic bowls and stuff, but now I’m into glass. When I was recovering from a chemical injury I was told not to use plastic containers for food or water. Glass was one of the suggested materials to use for storage.

That must have stuck with me because doing that and other things helped me get my health back. It was a long process to regain my ability to function in the world again. I had never dealt with a health crisis before. It changed everything about my lifestyle. And since what I did made me better, I’m sticking with what works.

Understanding

I find that when I have a clear understanding of what my objective should be I’m much more effective in getting things done. And sometimes that requires some communication. It’s not that I need to understand much. I need to understand what has to be accomplished, not why, just how it all comes together and who the players are.

Usually a series of questions with an adequate amount of explanation will go a long way, especially when the objective I’m going for is of benefit to those involved in the situation. It’s amazing how willing people are to help out when they are put in a situation where they will win for doing so. Everyone likes to be a winner.

I’ve noticed that honesty is the best policy when I’m working with others. People hear the truth and get very comfortable when they’re being dealt with in a straight up manner. I always notice that the truth cuts through anything and helps things move forward more smoothly. Telling the truth is an easy thing to do if you’re willing to do it.

Recording

I got a call from David over at Del Oro Music, that Robert was running late and to bring my guitar in to record the new songs for the album. I wasn’t sure about doing that because I thought I should have rehearsed a lot more. I, of course, used the excuse that my guitar strings should probably be changed to do the session.

When I stopped home, I pulled out my guitar and played through the songs. I decided that Robert could decide if the strings needed changing and headed over to the studio. Robert actually thought the guitar sounded better because the strings were broken in enough to have a warm tone. It felt good to be recording tracks again,

We got the guitar parts done for three songs and recorded a live version of “Baby So Long”. That’s the song I wrote with my family when I was 12 yrs. old. It’s fun to sing. It took a few takes to get it right. With a live recording, Robert can’t go in and sweeten some things like he can with separate tracks. This album is coming together nicely.

Rehearsing

I’ve been getting ready to record the love songs for my album. They’re not the standard Laura Cohn songs that get played in every set. I have a few of those. It’s fun to play them. For the studio, I have to be exact in timing, articulation, and expression on every song. It’s a lot to think about when the song has a lot of chord changes.

Two of these songs have finger picking guitar parts. “Our Love” is pretty intricate with the changes. My neighbors will probably know the song well after I’ve played it about a hundred times. That’s what it takes to get my chops in shape on a song like that. One song I wrote took me over two years to be able to play right, when I first started writing.

Most of the extreme talent people display is a result of a lot of rehearsal hours. I’m lucky that I can be redundant in my personality. It gives me the ability to play songs over and over again without getting tired of it. That and being a perfectionist gives me stamina. Rehearsing for the studio is different than rehearsing for stage. It’s more work.

'Tis The Season

It’s been really pretty at night around the Valley now that people are putting up their Christmas lights on their houses. I love the Christmas season. I’m kind of a bling bling girl at heart and anything that sparkles and shines with lots of colors puts a smile on my face. It’s always been that way with me ever since I was a little kid.

I also like that the holidays get me to slow down a bit. With the winter weather coming in and less hours of daylight, it’s nice to be in a mode of celebration, giving, and shifting gears to end the year. I’m always amazed at how much goes on in a year. When I look back at how things were in January and how things are now I can see growth in my life.

It’s good for me to take stock of how blessed I am, how great people are in my life and what I can do to be more helpful to the people around me. That gives me a good starting point in setting goals for the upcoming year. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. Goals work better for me. With the holidays I can get quiet and re-establish my priorities.

In The Moment

I’m not sure if it’s the holidays or something just shifted in me. Ever since I got my cat I don’t feel any need to rush or get things done quickly. It’s not that I’m being unproductive. I’m accomplishing a lot. It’s just that in each moment there is plenty of time to do whatever needs to be done and time takes on a different energy in the moment.

It’s like time isn’t what it used to be. I used to be in a hurry. I don’t know what the sense of urgency was exactly, but it’s nice to be relaxed in getting things done. There are times when I’m dealing with people who are in a mindset of immediacy and a little panicked in how they are approaching what they’re doing. It’s such a contrast.

It seems that there’s more time in a moment when I’m in the moment instead of in my head thinking of a bunch of stuff. It’s easier for me to focus on what I’m here to do when I’m where I am in my thinking. My mind used to wander a lot. Maybe I’ve just learned to appreciate what I have more so being where I am is more fun than anything else.

Del Oro Music

I was over at Del Oro Music today to drop something off. The people there really have fun working together. That’s probably what makes the vibe of the place so conducive to fabulous creativity. Aside from the fact that everyone is extremely talented, one of the nicest things about being there is that everyone is very real and down to earth.

It’s been fascinating how in a subtle way my producer, Robert Eibach, guitar extraordinaire, Carl Strand, percussionist/actor/photographer, Eddie Rouse, and vocal coach, April Diamond, have all helped me grow so much, and not just as an artist, but as a person. My approach to my life has changed from their influence.

And I just thought I was paying for studio time, vocal training, and some music tracks for my songs. It’s fascinating how my perspective shifts as things unfold. I don’t know what will happen with my album or my songs. I don’t know how people will respond to my songs at all. The funny thing to me is that I’m not even concerned about it.

From Taking To Giving

I heard a guy talking about being a taker. He said that he couldn’t go from taking to giving because you can’t give anything if you don’t have anything to give. He said that he needed to become a receiver and then he was able to become a giver once he had learned that. He also said that receiving is a gift for the people who are giving to you.

He was the first person I had ever heard talk about a process of change in that way. I hadn’t given it much thought. I’ve noticed that some people who give without being able to receive have a tough time being peaceful. It’s almost as if they’re stressed when they give. Before that guy mentioned his transition I didn’t see the connection with that.

I know for me, when I feel safe it’s easy for me to receive and give. If I’m not being honest with myself and get caught up in some kind of agenda then I can get off balance in how I show up in situations with people. I’m better when my heart is open to caring about others and contributing something that’s useful when I’m involved in my circumstance.

Brrrrrrrrrr

It’s been chilly in LA the last few days. There’s been a wind chill in the air that reminds me of the mid-west. It’s that bone chilling wind that puts me in the mood for hot soup. A friend of mine gave me a big pot of soup she made because she was going out of town. I had a bowl of it tonight and it was really good and made me feel warm inside.

I’ve been wearing a scarf and hat and lots of warm layers. I usually wear a light weight scarf because I find that keeping my neck warm is good for my singing voice. I also stay healthier when I don’t get a chill in my body and having my neck warm helps with that. After living in Colorado, I know how to dress for the cold. I learned that really well.

It may sound funny to people who are living in cold winter climates to know I’m talking about a 60 degree day, but in the Valley where I live it gets to be over 100 degrees for part of the summer, and any temperature under 75 degrees has me wearing jackets. I’m a little spoiled and I like it that way. Give me an Indian summer any day.

A&R Meeting

I was in the studio with my producer, Robert Eibach, working on tracks for “Don’t Ask Me Why” and “Bright Blue Skies”. After our session was over, we sat down for an A&R meeting. When I was visiting my family, they told me very emphatically that they thought I should have their favorite love songs that I’ve written on my new album.

So I asked Robert if we could talk about their suggestions and feedback. My family tells me what they like. I played Robert my 2 love songs that my family loves the most and 1 love song that I feel is a strong song of mine. I also played him a song that I wrote with my family when I was 12 years old. My family played music together when I was young.

Robert agreed that having the love songs on my album would make the album better. He also liked the song my family wrote together. He said that was the song that stuck in his head the most. I don’t know if that’s because it was the last song I played for him or not, but I trust Robert’s advice on things. It is a song people like a lot when I perform it live.

White Teeth

When I was in Tucson with my family, my mom looked at me one day in the way only a mother can and then brought out whitening strips for my teeth. She loves me very much and has always given me pointers and tips on how to take care of what I’ve got so I’ll stay in great shape. I love my mom for that. And she’s given me good advice.

She taught me how to place the goopy strips across my teeth and then talked to me while they were making my teeth white. Sitting for a half hour with strips on my teeth is now something I’m doing once a day. The package says to do it twice a day, but my mom told me to do it once a day so I’m listening to my mom. She knows me better than the box.

We also had some girl time with my sister and shared make-up tips. I learned a few cool things from some make-up artists when I did infomercials and got to show my sister and mom how to do the Hollywood make-up style I sport these days. There’s something about doing that stuff with my mom and my sister that makes my life complete.

What's On The Inside

I heard someone talking about how material things didn’t make him feel better inside even though on the outside he had everything. He said that until he was able to find a spiritual way of giving there was never enough of anything to make him happy or feel okay inside even though he was looking good on the outside with material stuff.

A few people I know came to mind when he was talking. I know someone that has a great looking life on the outside, but on the inside he’s more than a mess. That isn’t to say that working to be able to buy nice things doesn’t bring in a sense of accomplishment to someone or that having a wealthy lifestyle doesn’t give someone comforts.

He was saying that for him, just having the material stuff didn’t make him happy. When he found a way of living that made him feel good about himself it wasn’t about the material outside stuff. It was about helping other people and continually doing things for others. That was what made him feel good. That was what changed how he lived his life.

Home Sweet Home

I got back from Tucson and it’s great to be back with my cat, Macey. When I first walked in the door I found her in her favorite place to chill and picked her up. Then I fed her some food and we got to spend some much needed time together. She’s very happy to have her mommy back home with her. She is the cutest little girl.

My friend, Maureen, took care of Macey for me while I was gone. It was nice to have such a great babysitter for her. It helped me relax more knowing that my baby was in good hands. This was the first time I’d left town since I got Macey so it was important to me to make sure that she would have everything she needed to be happy.

It feels good to take it easy after traveling with my guitar today. 2 airports and 2 airplane rides put me in the mood for ordering dinner to be delivered. It’s my special indulgence. I pre-board when I fly with my guitar so I can put it in the overhead bin without disturbing people. It’s more considerate to do that so people don’t have a case close to their heads.

Green Valley Pecans

Down in Green Valley, Arizona the largest pecan grove spreads out along a 9 mile by 1 mile stretch of land. The trees are beautiful and pretty big. I never thought much about pecan trees before I saw the trees when we were driving on the road next to the farm. Most of the leaves were golden yellow. The colors of the leaves reminded me of the trees in the mid-west in the fall. Nature is so amazing.

My brother-in-law told me a little bit about the farm. Today we went to their store so I could buy pecans to bring home with me. Fresh pecans from the farm sounded like a good thing. They had chocolate covered pecans, turtles (which they called Camel Backs), honey roasted pecans, toffee and pralines with pecans, and plain pecans. I was surprised they didn’t have pecan pie. It was fun to buy gifts there.

It’s always nice when I can get something that’s locally grown when I go somewhere. The energy brings me back to basics and that simplicity is something I really like to enjoy. I love the luxury of modern living I have at home. The convenience of my lifestyle is something I’m very grateful for. When I mix that with the flavors of other places I get a warm feeling inside that makes me smile. I love to smile.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today I can say that I enjoyed having a day to relax, not wear any make-up and eat great food. I did have pumpkin ice cream pie and that was wonderful. The sugar rush afterward made me sleepy, but it tasted so good. I love the holiday. It was really fun to celebrate my birthday today, too. Two of my closest friends also share my birthday so it was fun to sing Happy Birthday to us on the phone.

I haven’t been out of town for Thanksgiving in years. I usually avoid traveling during holidays because of the crowds. This was a great year to be out of town. The weather in Tucson has been exceptionally beautiful and I love the desert when it’s warm not hot. It’s been nice to spend time with my family and catch up in person. My nephew is 4 ½ now and seeing him has been a real joy.

Holidays are so different for me now then how they were for me when I was younger. I can see how much I’ve changed over the years and that‘s a good thing. I am truly grateful for what I have in my life and what I do. The love I experience with my family, friends and people I meet is such a gift. My family got into a discussion about the meaning of life. I don’t know what it means, but I know what I like.

Watching Madonna

The Madonna concert was on TV and it was great to see her perform. She really puts on a dynamic, energetic show. It helps that she has a huge budget to have magnificent lighting, hire incredible dancers, and a creative team that makes any group of songs entertaining to watch. It was also cool to see her play guitar. She is a one of a kind type of artist. There is only one Madonna and no one does things quite like her.

It’s important for an artist to have their own style in how they do things that makes them identifiable and unique. Even if an artist reminds someone of another artist, it’s important that every artist express their true voice and vision. Madonna is a master of expression. Whether or not you like her or what she does, no one can argue about how well she does what she does. She’s the real deal and isn’t afraid to let anyone know it.

I think that’s what I respect the most about Madonna. I’m not like her in what I’m here to do artistically but the one thing that I get from her is that being true to myself in my craft is more important than anything else. That is what will give me the endurance and strength to continue to create at the level I need to and persevere no matter what. I have to do what I do whether anyone likes it or not and I’m doing it.

Airport Travel

I flew out to Tucson from the Burbank airport. When I checked my guitar they needed to open the case because my guitar has a pick up in it. They see electronics in their scanners so they needed to make sure I wasn’t carrying any explosives. My guitar is named Rosie Hitler, but I don’t think I have a terrorist vibe. It did make me happy to know that the airport security people are checking everything. I like being safe.

I decided to get a bottle of Smart Water when I got in the terminal. I didn’t feel very smart when the cashier told me it cost $3.25. I suddenly felt dumb for some reason. Next time I’m going to look for something a little more hip if I’m going to have to over pay for it. The concession people must love the increase in business since the new age of terrorism has shown up in our lives. They have a built in customer base.

When we got to Las Vegas, the only place to eat was a snack bar with a Taco Bell. I got a banana. It’s been awhile since I’ve eaten any fast food and I wasn’t up for it. I did see a man eating a sandwich he had brought with him on the plane and I was wishing I had brought something to eat from home. His sandwich was wrapped in aluminum foil. I’ll have to try that on my way home. I did meet some nice people though.
